Grateful to represent AHRA at the IAS Educational Fund Workshop in Bangkok!
On 4 November, with the support of AHRA’s Senior Advisor, the AHRA Secretariat Coordinator delivered the presentation, “Navigating Barriers to Harm Reduction Services in Southeast Asia,” highlighting the realities faced by people who use drugs, refugees, migrants, and LGBTQIA+ communities in border areas.
The presentation explored:
• How crackdowns, lack of legal status, and language barriers limit access to harm reduction and health services
• Regional best practices such as peer-led outreach, community methadone, and integrated OST + HIV/TB/SRH services
• The importance of shifting from punitive drug control to health- and rights-based approaches
Special thanks to Dr. Linn Aung Thu, AHRA Consultant, for moderating the session, and gratitude to the International AIDS Society (IAS) for creating a platform to amplify community-led voices.
Harm reduction works when:
• Communities lead
• Data guides decisions
• Systems respect human rights
